CNC Machinist / Programmer

Position Title: CNC Machinist / Programmer
Location: Elk Grove Village, IL -or- Hicksville, NY
Reports To: Shop Production Supervisor

Basic Purpose and Objective of the Position:

This position has overall responsibility for programming and machining parts using CNC equipment to meet the requirements defined by specifications, work instructions and direction of supervisors.

Major Responsibilities:

The CNC Machinist/Programmer will perform tasks directly related to the machining of both production and prototype parts made of various steels, alloys, engineering plastics, and magnetic materials. The work is job oriented, following detailed blueprints, customer specifications, internal work instructions, and engineering direction both written and verbal. Employees with this title may program. set up, and operate powered machine tools such as CNC turning centers, CNC Mills, CNC surface grinders, CNC wire EDM and other related equipment including manual machinery as needed to meet customer demand. Employee will also be required at times to operate various hand tools, precision measuring equipment and associated gages and tooling. In addition, employees with this title will be tasked with preventative maintenance and housekeeping duties.

Knowledge Required:

  • Minimum 5 years experience programming, set up and operation of CNC lathes, Mills. Grinders, Wire EDM.
  • Experience with Mastercam/CAD/CAM or similar software and drawing programs.
  • Experience working with wide range of steels (CRS, Aluminum, Hastelloy, Inconel, etc). Familiar with working properties of different steels.
  • Experience in a make to order / engineer to order shop environment.
  • Able to develop required fixturing and tooling to perform everyday tasks.
  • Working knowledge of most machine shop equipment including mills, lathes, drills, surface and rotary grinders, plunge EDM and wire EDM.
  • Knowledge of capabilities of machine shop equipment.
  • Ability to program, set up and run up complex jobs without supervision.
  • Able to routinely develop programs, set ups, and set parameters on new / prototype parts with speed and precision.
  • Knowledge and use of a wide variety of precision measuring equipment.
  • Machine Shop Math and Complex Blueprint reading skills. GD&T required.
  • Lean Manufacturing experience.
  • Self-Motivated, focused and results oriented.
  • Self-determined and driven to achieve defined goals.
  • Ability to stand for long periods of time.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs.

Nature of Position and Business Environment:

Interactions:

  • Daily contacts with Production Supervisor, other machinists, QC inspection staff and other plant personnel involved in producing or assembling Dexter products.

Business Environment:

  • Fairly dynamic, as requirements grow and change with the addition of new products.
  • Demanding, as customer requirements place a growing importance on quality conformance, response time and meeting deadlines.
  • Challenging, as technical expertise in a wide variety of industries is esstential for success.

Working Environment:

  • Clean machine shop environment.

Organizational Relationships:

  • Reports to Production Supervisor.
  • Works with other machine operators, assemblers, inspectors, various other production personnel.
  • Occasional interface with company management, engineering purchasing and sales personnel.

Supervision:

  • No responsibility for supervision of other Dexter associates.
