Electronic Instruments and Business Equipment
Many electronic instrument components depend on a static magnetic field for function and accuracy. Analog meters, relays, gauges, and sensors are typical applications. The trend is toward smaller, lighter, more accurate, instruments that use less energy. The critical factor is often the selection of magnet material and the design of the magnetic circuit for the device. This is true as well for business equipment or as it is often referred to as office automation (OA) equipment and includes such common devices as facsimile machines, printers, copiers and computers including peripherals such as CD-ROM and DVD-ROM drives. DMT can provide assistance in selecting magnetic materials and innovative magnetic solutions that enable size reduction, and permit devices to work in harsh environments with accurate and repeatable results.
Alnico is well suited for use in electronic instruments. Its excellent temperature stability and high maximum working temperature (550 ºC) make it ideal for sensitive applications. Alnico's low resistance to demagnetization can be used to good effect to stabilize properties against potential demagnetizing effects or calibrate individual magnets to precise parameters. Where a higher resistance to demagnetization is required, and the effects of temperature or size are less of a concern, Ferrite (Ceramic) magnet materials can be used. This cost effective material is widely found in consumer products and is ideal for high torque AC and DC motors, alternators, microwave focusing devices. For miniaturization and higher performance, magnetic circuits can be designed around the Rare Earth family of materials. This includes the materials Samarium Cobalt (SmCo) and Neodymium-Iron-Boron (NdFeB). Both provide higher energy than the previously mentioned materials. SmCo has excellent temperature characteristics and a high resistance to corrosion. It is frequently used in smaller, high temperature motors and vacuum devices. NdFeB, is the strongest of all materials, but has a lower resistance to temperature and corrosion. In its compression-bonded form, Neoform is ideal for small, complex shapes and multi-pole rotors. All of these materials are available in various bonded forms whether it be calendared, extruded, compression bonded or injection molded.
