Meter Movements
Permanent magnets can be used in metering applications such as speedometers or watt-hour meters. The most common design is called the D'Arsonval meter and is shown in the figure. For greater sensitivity the coil is wound around a soft iron core and positioned between the poles of a permanent magnet. The coil is energized to produce a magnetic dipole in the iron core, which will then turn clockwise or counter-clockwise, depending on the direction of the current in the coil. Typically a spring is used to pull the core back to the starting position when power is off.
