EAS Detachers

Electronic Article Systems (EAS) are common in many retail stores to deter shoplifting and reduce inventory shrinkage. EAS systems are easily identified by the telltale antenna panels at store exits and security tags, cases and EAS labels of all sizes and shapes attached to high value goods combined with detachers or deactivators on the point of sale (POS) countertop.

These tags and labels must be removed or deactivated and product removed from cases by the retailer after purchase to prevent inadvertent alarms from sounding.  Many of the tags use clutching mechanisms that can be released with specially designed magnetic detachers.  Our patented magnetic designs generate very strong magnetic fields and high field gradients in small packages for easy and consistent removal of tags while taking up less counter space.  Our deactivators are designed to reliably desensitize EAS labels on contact.  Our patent pending multi-function detacher combines the magnetic functionality to remove a variety of tags in one package, thus eliminating the need for multiple detachers on the POS countertop for retailers using multiple tag types.

Dexter is an OEM manufacturer of detachers & deactivators and provide turnkey solutions down to mounting/installation hardware and instructions.  Our magnetic detacher designs can open a variety of hard tags ranging from the standard type to the more secure super tags and can be either mounted on the countertop or recessed.  Our deactivators work with a variety of EAS labels as well.  Additionally, when something more is desired, we partner with our customers in the design and manufacture of custom detachers tailored to specific tags of various sizes, strengths and shapes.

Dexter_4x6_Deactivator_Pad

4x6 Deactivator

1.  We manufacture a variety of detachers that work with even broader variety of tags. So first, can you use one of our standard detacher designs?  Go to the "Types Tab" to view all of our standard detachers/deactivators.

2.  If not, do you know the specifications of the tags you want to remove including the magnetic field required for removal? 

Submission of a sample of tags for our evaluation is preferred.  If you want a multi-functional detacher that can remove a variety of tags, we need specifications or samples of all the tag types you want removed.

Typically, sintered Neodymium Iron Boron material provides the most cost effective magnetic detachers, because it generates the highest magnetic fields in the smallest package given the operating environment.  Some of the deactivator designs lend themselves to flexible magnet sheets, injection molded Ceramic or Bonded Nd-Fe-B

Plastic injected molded components are extensively used for the housings affording a wide range of aesthetic options and looks and sintered metals are used in containment and focus of magnetic fields.

  1. Does Dexter manufacture EAS systems? 
  1. No, we are an OEM designer and manufacturer of detachers and deactivators for EAS manufacturers.  We offer a variety of standard designs and excel at optimizing magnetic designs to open a wide variety of tags including the difficult to open super tags.

If we have the tags the detacher needs to remove, we will test them with standard detachers to find out the required magnetic field. Then we will use computer modeling, CAD design and prototyping. A prototype can be ready as quick as in two weeks.

If we don’t have the tags, we will need detailed tag information (every ferrous component and its position, and the strength of the spring if any). We will do computer modeling, not only for magnetic field, but also the magnetic force on the clutch, before we move on to CAD and prototyping. The turnaround time will depend on the information available for calculation.
